Can I expect any additional costs with my car rental?
You can add additional insurance cover to your car rental package. This can be done in advance or can be organised on collection of the car. Check with your credit card company before you travel. Some companies offer car rental coverage as a bonus. Also check what you are covered for with your own insurance before travelling. If you decide not to take out additional insurance, the rental company may ask for a credit card to guarantee the amount that you are liable for in the case of an accident. The credit card must be in the name of the main driver. Debit cards may not be accepted. Do not forget to factor your fuel costs into your overall vacation budget. You can expect to pay approximately €1.50 – €1.70 per litre for petrol. Your tank will be full when you collect from the rental company. You are expected to return the car with a full tank also. If t is not full on return you will be charged for the deficit.  You may be asked for a fuel deposit on collection of you auto. Check the replacement fuel cost with the car company on collection and you will see which option is cheaper whilst travelling. If you are travelling with children you can expect to pay approximately €25 per booster seat or €40 for a child seat. Please advise your travel advisor in advance if you require child seats. There will be a supplement charge for any additional drivers that you may wish to add to the package. Your travel advisor will advise you of the extra cost. You may to change the dates of your booking. The rate for the new dates may not be the same as your initial quotation. One way fees will apply if you are delivering your car to a different location than where your collect your rental. One way fees can be up to €55. Any fines incurred by the driver will have to be paid directly. Examples of fines may include littering or parking offences.

What documentation do I need to bring with me?
If you are using insurance from your own policies at home, then it is best to bring a copy with you including car insurance if applicable.  Of course you will need to show photo identification when collecting your rental. You can show your passport as proof of ID.  It is always best to leave a copy of your important documentation at home or with a family member in case of emergency. It may speed up the process of replacing a lost passport for example.

Do I need a GPS or Sat Nav System?
Irish Travel Advisors would recommend that you have a GPS or Sat Nav system with you during the trip. You can rent one from the car rental company when you are collecting the car. If you have your own GPS system, you could bring it to Ireland with you to save money. Make sure that your system is updated. There are many new Motorways in Ireland that may not be uploaded on older maps.  We would also recommend that you do not rely entirely on a GPS system. Do not follow the system blindly. Bring a road map with you also & use both map & GPS together. For major routes, follow road signs as much as possible as the GPS will not always send you the best way.
